Stephen White Critical Conditions: An Alan Gregory Thriller Signet 19990101 0451191706 / 9780451191700 MM Very Good 0451191706 From Library Journal In his sixth suspense novel, White (Remote Control, LJ 1/97) and his protagonist psychologist Alan Gregory take on managed healthcare and come up with another compulsive read. A 15-year-old girl attempts suicide and turns mute, her two-year-old sister is dying from a rare disease while her health insurer won't pay for expensive experimental treatment, and the doctor who heads the insurance company is found shot to death. While Gregory treats the teenager and consults with police, his cop friend Sam Purdy (an in-law of principals in the case) has to keep his distance, and complications mount. White ties up all the loose ends, concerning death threats, blackmail, murder, extortion, and suicide, after a spine-tingling chase through the conveyor system of the new Denver airport. But he leaves strings dangling regarding his appealing cast of continuing characters (such as Gregory's wife Lauren's health and neighbor Adrienne's love life), guaranteeing anticipation for number seven. -?Michele Leber, Fairfax Cty. P.L., Va. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Booklist When Boulder, Colorado, psychologist Alan Gregory is asked to come to a hospital emergency room to consult on a puzzling case of attempted suicide by a 15-year-old girl, he finds a teen with more than her fair share of problems. Merritt Strait's mom is a TV investigative reporter; her stepdad is a psychologist handling custody evaluations; and their toddler daughter Chaney--Merritt's half-sister--has a heart problem that only an experimental procedure can remedy, but their managed care company, MedExcel, won't pay for it. Merritt is mute when Gregory begins to talk with her in the hospital; the discovery of the dead body of the head of MedExcel--and of bloody clothes and a gun in and around Merritt's room--suggests she may have a good reason for silence. Gregory proceeds patiently with the stalwart teen and more aggressively with various adults with the help of his police detective pal Sam Purdy. Given White's solid reputation and lively debate about the controversial issues animating his Alan Gregory thrillers, expect reader interest. Stephen White The Best Revenge Wheeler Publishing 1 1587244608 / 9781587244605 H Very Good 1587244608 BCE. Amazon Review Tom Clone's stay on death row is over, thanks to new evidence uncovered by Kelda James, a young FBI agent whose efforts on Clone's behalf have not exactly endeared her to her colleagues. Referred by that same agent to psychologist Alan Gregory, Clone is struggling to adapt to life outside prison. But others who believe he got off on a technicality don't agree that the former medical student deserves his freedom, and they will go to any lengths to make sure he's punished accordingly for the crime of which he was once accused. There are some surprising plot twists here, but more interesting is Gregory's midlife crisis and his declining interest in his work: as his partner responds when he voices doubts about his efficacy as a therapist, "Those are the bricks we lay. If you've started hating the bricks, maybe it's time to reconsider being a brick layer." Certainly Gregory gets himself into more sinister and frightening scrapes than most shrinks, and this is one of his strangest cases. The Best Revenge is a solid, well-reasoned thriller, set in the marvelously drawn Colorado landscape the author has made his own, with guest appearances by minor figures familiar to readers of this increasingly popular psychological suspense series. --Jane Adams --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal New evidence proves that Tom Clone did not commit murder, but after 13 years in prison, he has developed dark tendencies that psychologist Alan Gregory may not be able to conquer. Stephen White The Program Dell 20020101 0440237262 / 9780440237266 MM Very Good 0440237262 Amazon Review Alan Gregory, the Boulder psychologist who's starred in Stephen White's long-running series of suspense novels, takes second billing in The Program. The star is Kirsten Lord, a New Orleans prosecutor who lands in Gregory's office after her husband is killed and her daughter's life threatened by a criminal she sent to prison. "Every precious thing I lose, you will lose two" is the warning that sends her on the run until she finally lands in the Witness Protection Program. But the danger's a long way from over. As a prosecutor, she was a loud and public critic of "the program," and as events unfold, it appears that her deadliest enemies may not be safely behind bars. Some of the most interesting passages put Kirsten and Gregory together in scenes that underscore White's professional expertise. A clinical psychologist in private practice in Boulder, he brings his understanding of human nature out of the consulting room and onto the page. Fans of Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware will love Alan Gregory, whose relatively minor role at the start grows as the plot deepens and turns a hunt-and-chase thriller into a multidimensional, complex, and vividly realized novel. Long overdue for a place high on the bestseller list, White may well break out with this one. --Jane Adams --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Publishers Weekly Once it recovers from a wobbly beginning, this ninth thriller in the bestselling series featuring Boulder, Colo., clinical psychologist Alan Gregory sprints competently along. Peyton Francis, aka Kirsten Lord, was once a New Orleans district attorney. Now she and her nine-year-old daughter are enrolled in the witness protection program, in hiding from Peyton's husband's assassin, who was most likely hired by a Colombian drug lord Peyton put away for life. Given a new ID and moved to Boulder, Peyton is befriended by another witness protection participant, a former mob hitman who, like herself, is referred by the Feds to Dr. Gregory for counseling. Plagued by doubts about the federal marshal entrusted with her safety and tortured by second thoughts about the impending execution of a black man she may have mistakenly sent to death row in Florida, Peyton races against time to stay the Florida execution, and is forced to go into hiding from the very witness protection forces assigned to protect her. The usually sure-handed White is guilty of some artless writing at the novel's start, creating a veritable obstacle course of meandering points of view, including an obscure long-running metaphoric thread linking repressed memories to images of a pod of whales. However, once the narrative drive settles mainly into Peyton's first-person voice, the story comes handily together. Featuring an interesting cast, including a young Texas schoolmarm turned professional hit person, a sinister cabal of federal marshals with hidden agendas and an entrepreneurial assassination broker in Atlanta, the narrative drives to an edge-of-your-seat denouement. Author tour. (Apr.)Forecast: This is not White's best effort, but fans of the series will check in to catch up on Alan Gregory's adventures his wife is pregnant with their first child in this installment. Stephen White Warning Signs Dell 2003 0440237416 / 9780440237419 Mass Market Paperback Very Good 0440237416 From Publishers Weekly When can a psychologist go to the police about a client without violating the doctor/patient contract? Boulder psychologist Alan Gregory, veteran of nine previous White suspense novels, wrestles with this dilemma in White's latest top-flight thriller. Neurotic Naomi Bigg seeks help when she suspects her high school son, Paul, plans to avenge his sister's rape and his father's murder conviction for killing the rapist, who was let off on a technicality. Paul's best friend, Ramp, an explosives fanatic, lost his mother to a paroled rapist/murderer and has his own list of targets. Alan's erratic sessions with Naomi begin to unnerve him when he picks up hints of a connection to the recent brutal murder of Boulder's DA, his wife Lauren's boss. Even worse, he realizes that Lauren, suffering from MS and just ending maternity leave, assisted in the bungled prosecution of Paul's sister's rapist. And to further complicate things, the prime suspect in the DA murder case is Boulder police detective Lucy Tanner, partner of Alan's best friend, Sam Purdy. When a car bomb kills a judge's wife in Denver, Alan is torn with indecision, but goes to Sam after explosives are found in the dead DA's house. When a bomb goes off at Alan's office and Lucy is kidnapped, Alan and Sam team up and track Ramp on his deadly bomb spree. White (Private Practices) deliciously taunts the reader with his trademark twists, smoothly weaving plots together and sprinkling red herrings among the solid clues. Could Columbine have been prevented if the shooters' parents had gone to the police? How many warning signs are needed before action should be taken? These questions have led to the "no tolerance" policies in many schools and underlie this tensely satisfying outing. National ad/promo.
