Mary Shelley Frankenstein (Signet Classics) New York Signet Classics 2000 0451527712 / 9780451527714 Paperback New 0451527712 Amazon.com Review Frankenstein, loved by many decades of readers and praised by such eminent literary critics as Harold Bloom, seems hardly to need a recommendation. If you haven't read it recently, though, you may not remember the sweeping force of the prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multilayered doppelgänger themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. As fantasy writer Jane Yolen writes of this (the reviewer's favorite) edition, "The strong black and whites of the main text [illustrations] are dark and brooding, with unremitting shadows and stark contrasts. But the central conversation with the monster--who owes nothing to the overused movie image
but is rather the novel's charnel-house composite--is where [Barry] Moser's illustrations show their greatest power ... The viewer can all but smell the powerful stench of the monster's breath as its words spill out across the page. Strong book-making for one of the world's strongest and most remarkable books." Includes an illuminating afterword by Joyce Carol Oates. --This text refers to the Paperback edition. From School Library Journal Grade 9 Up-Full-color drawings, photographs, and reproductions with extended captions have been added to the unedited text of Shelley's novel, thus placing the work in the context of the era in which it was written. The artwork faithfully represents the text and makes this edition appealing to reluctant readers. Unfortunately, many of the captions provide tangential information that, although interesting, interrupts the flow of the story. However, readers will quickly learn that it is not necessary to read every caption and appreciate this volume for its many quality illustrations. Shelley Winters Shelley II: The Middle of My Century Simon & Schuster 0671442104 / 9780671442101 Hardcover Very Good 0671442104 ISBN: 0671442104 Hardcover with dustjacket, 494 pages. VG/VG. Previous owner's name on the front endpaper, otherwise a clean unmarked copy. Simon & Schuster, New York, 1989. Biographies & Memoirs. From Publishers Weekly Resuming her autobiography, following Shelley, Also Known as Shirley , the 60-year-old actress recalls her life after divorce from Vittorio Gassman. Readers will learn about her as a Broadway star fighting her "blond bombshell" image in films during the 1950s and '60s, and about her near-religious devotion to the Actors Studio and to liberal politics. The memoir is largely a gossip-lover's feast. Winters reports on Tony Franciosa, her second husband and his lovers (Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, among others), and tells of her own affairs with Sean Connery, Albert Finney et al. Her merrier stories include reminiscences of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. No celebrity, seemingly, is missing from the autobiography of this Oscar winner (for her role in The Diary of Anne Frank ). Photos not seen by PW. First serial to Good Housekeeping; BOMC selection. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. May ship from alternate location depending on your zip code and availability. Rick Shelley The Buchanan Campaign Ace 0441002927 / 9780441002924 PAPERBACK Good 0441002927 ISBN: 0441002927 Mass Market Paperback. G. Reissue edition (December 1, 1995) Science Fiction. Compelling read in a very British future, January 18, 1998 Reviewer: A reader Great start of a new trilogy set a thousand years in the future, and in human colonized solar systems far, far away. The twist that sets this above most contemporary military sf is the uniqueness of having the Second (British) Commonwealth being a major power in space -- while the pseudo-democratic Confederation is the enemy. The story is well told and focuses more on the human condition than on "Big Science". In fact, I was surprised at how Shelley's future was so very familiar in terms of both science and human nature.
