1 Mark Steadman Bang-Up Season
Longstreet Pr 1990 0929264444 / 9780929264448 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
0929264444 0929264444 From Library Journal This is a pleasant bit of high school football fluff that will appeal to any aficionado of the game, whether true jock or enthusiastic fan. The time is 1947; the place is Savannah, Georgia. The St. Boniface Fighting Irish haven't had a winning season since 1942, when Horse Rooney led the team to victory, but no one on the present team seems to care. That is, they don't until Jack Lynch transfers to St. Boniface High and begins his one-man program of inspiration and example. The influence of Lynch seems a bit strong for just one young man, but Steadman treats his hero and the St. Boniface "bang-up season" with ready humor and endearing nostalgia. Much of this novel appeared in the author's A Lion's Share (Avon, 1977). Appropriate for adult and YA collections. - Thomas L. Kilpatrick, Southern Illinois Univ. at Carbondale Lib.
