Faith's long-time friend, singer Maggie Rose, has criminal associates, and palace chauffeur Eugenio Magari is in reality an officer in San Sebastian's secret police. Also making appearances are various palace functionaries and Hollywood types. Unfortunately, the characterizations are lax, motivations often muddled, the pacing slow. Waller, who is perhaps best known for his nonfiction books, Dog Day Afternoon and Hide in Plain Sight, barely keeps the pot boiling in this one. Literary Guild selection.
