1 Diana Diamond The Daughter-In-Law: A Novel of Suspense
St. Martin's Paperbacks 20040501 0312987714 / 9780312987718 MM Very Good
0312987714 0312987714 From Publishers Weekly Is it an accident or murder when thrill-seeker Jonathan Donner, heir to a billion-dollar empire, vanishes while deep-sea diving? At the top of the suspect list is Jonathan's new bride, Nicole Pierce, a stunning beauty with a questionable past. In this latest thriller by Diamond (The Good Sister; The Babysitter), the eligible playboy meets Wall Street stockbroker Nicole while skydiving, and a whirlwind affair follows. He brings her to his clan's impressive digs on Long Island where Billy Joel is hired to play the family's parties and frequent guests include Rudy Giuliani and a Donald Trump-like character. Dubious of how they met, Jonathan's mother, Alexandra, believes Nicole set out to snag a rich husband. She, however, is the only one who's suspicious: Jonathan's sister, Pam, quickly takes to Nicole, even asking her for career advice, and Jonathan's powerful and intimidating father, Jack, goes weak in the knees when faced with Nicole's bewitching charms. All Nicole wants is acceptance into the Donner clan, but can she convince the icy family matriarch of her worthiness? After Jonathan's mysterious death, the two battle it out. Diamond writes like an aspiring action screenwriter, paying less attention to her prose ("The conclusion was inconclusive") than to the obligatory sex scenes and melodramatic plotting. The dialogue, too, may be better suited to film ("`You can't always tiptoe through the tulips. Sometimes you have to wade in the filth'"), but fans of Diamond's previous work will find the book entertaining enough for a day at the beach. Review "Diana Diamond's gripping thriller takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level." --Marie Claire on The Good Sister "Imaginative, satisfying...grips the reader and doesn't let go." --Mary Jane Clark, author of Nobody Knows -- Review

2 William P. Kennedy; Diana Diamond The First Wife
St. Martin's Paperbacks 20050501 0312993331 / 9780312993337 MM Very Good
0312993331 0312993331 From Publishers Weekly Pseudonymous Diamond's (The Good Sister, etc.) updated version of Daphne du Maurier's classic Rebecca offers a savvy heroine (divorced business reporter Jane Warren), a widowed media mogul (globe-trotting power broker William Andrews) and a famous socialite first wife brutally murdered eight years before in her posh Adirondack lodge. Like the original, this romantic thriller begins with the whirlwind courtship of a down-to-earth younger woman by a wealthy older man, as Andrews whisks Jane off to Paris while she tries to interview him for a profile she's writing. Diamond enlivens the familiar story line with modern touches: instead of a loafing cousin, she introduces Jane's hapless playwright ex; instead of an English country estate, she features a New Jersey horse farm, a Manhattan penthouse apartment and, of course, the Adirondack lodge. She also adds two children from Andrews's previous marriage. Such twists on the 1938 original add to the reader's delight: how will the modern heroine handle the old-fashioned mystery? How will the old-fashioned hero handle the modern heroine? And who is the villainous Mrs. Danvers, and what will she do next? Even when presenting details about sex, business and a catered wedding that would make du Maurier blush, Diamond never forgets that the story's appeal lies in the heroine's frequently failed attempts to understand the hold the first wife keeps over a husband who otherwise looks too good to be true. Without pretense and with energy to spare, Diamond builds excitement through a series of inevitable yet still somehow surprising scenes, making her fresh take on an old classic not great literature but very good entertainment. 3 Diana Diamond The Good Sister
St. Martin's Paperbacks 20030601 0312984685 / 9780312984687 MM Very Good
0312984685 0312984685 From Publishers Weekly Quality time with the family has never seemed as frightening as it does in this satisfying and highly unsettling suspense thriller from the author of The Trophy Wife. Sisters Catherine and Jennifer Pegan are heirs to a communications empire about to introduce its biggest project ever, a satellite system that promises to further inflate their already overstuffed bank accounts. Reticent techno-genius Jennifer is the brains of the operation, while glamorous Catherine uses marketing savvy and low-cut cocktail gowns to lure backers for the project. When handsome actor-cum-playboy Padraig O'Connell falls for Jennifer, the company's manager, Peter Barnes, is suspicious of Padraig's motives and becomes even more suspicious when someone makes attempts on both sisters' lives. Although the sisters are publicly the best of friends, a violent rivalry sizzles between them. The novel is punctuated by the murderous, sociopathic rants of one of the sisters, convinced that the other is trying to kill her and determined to pull the trigger first. Which sister is the psychopath, which the intended victim? Diamond keeps readers guessing until the very end, and her thrilling story is backed up by taut writing and snappy dialogue. Readers looking for a beach book this summer will be delighted by this bone-chilling saga and may start looking at their own siblings a bit more warily. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Booklist Diamond's latest lacks the luster of The Babysitter [BKL My 15 01], but it maintains the author's high standard for suspense. Italicized interchapters expressing the psychotic ramblings of the "bad" sister intrude more than enlighten, and the characters, usually among Diamond's strong points, come across mainly as caricatures. That said, the action is definitely Diamond caliber. After their father's death, siblings Jennifer and Catherine Pegan take over his multibillion-dollar communications firm. The wealthy sisters are quite different: Jennifer is a plain-Jane athletic type, in contrast to Catherine, a glamorous celebrity. When handsome, down-on-his-luck Irish movie actor Padraig O'Connell falls for Jennifer, Catherine and Peter Barnes, a partner in the company, are instantly suspicious of his motives. After Jennifer is nearly killed in a car crash, their suspicions grow. Then Catherine is attacked, and it soon becomes obvious that one sister is out to get the other. Finding out which one will keep fans of Danielle Steele and Mary Higgins Clark turning pages. Jenny McLarin Copyright ? American Library Association.
