2 Gwendoline Butler Coffin And The Paper Man
Worldwide Library 19931101 0373261330 / 9780373261338 MM Very Good
0373261330 From Publishers Weekly The brutal murder of a young girl polarizes the inhabitants of the newly gentrified London neighborhood under the jurisdiction of police chief commander John Coffin, seen before in Coffin in the Museum of Crime . Victim Anna Mary Kinver belonged to a working-class family long resident in the area, while one of the suspects, Tim Zeman, is the son of a well-to-do doctor. Although a blood-soaked vagrant seems a more likely suspect at first, anonymous letters signed "Paper Man" threaten vengeance if the police don't arrest Tim. The mental breakdown of Anna's father, the deaths of two members of Tim's family and then his apparent suicide add further complications. While neighborhood turmoil escalates, Coffin is forced to unravel this complex skein of events while fulfilling the day-to-day requirements of his new position and conducting a love affair with actress Stella Pinero, who runs a nearby theater workshop and knows the families involved in the murders. Butler pens a superior procedural, limning her chosen area of London as it undergoes the throes of physical and sociological change. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Kirkus Reviews Scotland Yard's Chief Commander John Coffin is, at last, mostly at ease with the Docklands area he now commands (Coffin in the Museum of Crime, etc.), living in an apartment neighboring one owned by actress Stella Pinero, his longtime friend, sometime lover. The district, a mix of old poverty and new wealth, is shaken by the rape-murder of young Anna Mary Kinver, her body found by Jim Marsh, who walks the dogs of well-to-do families on Feather Street. Doctors Leonard and Felicity Zeman live there with son Tim, who's a prime suspect in the killing. Anna Mary's grief-crazed father Fred is sure of Tim's guilt and exults as the Zeman family is hit by repeated tragedies. Meanwhile, Coffin--besieged by ominous letters signed ``Paperman,'' malicious mischief and worse from local hoodlums, and proof that a poisoner is at work--slowly ties up a cascade of loose ends and solves a complex puzzle in this richly textured police procedural. One of the best in the Coffin series. -- Copyright ?1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 Gwendoline Butler Coffin Knows The Answer (Wwl Mystery)
Worldwide Library 2004 0373265050 / 9780373265053 Mass Market Paperback Very Good
0373265050 Review 'Butler distils her own brand of disquiet: omnipresent and irresistible.' The Sunday Times; 'Hauntingly atmospheric... explores the dark geography of a fictional London with almost Dickensian intensity' The Times; 'Her inventiveness never seems to flag' Times Literary Supplement John Coffin (Coffin's Ghost, 2001, etc.) has been knighted for his services as Chief Commander of Police in London's fictitious Second City, but whatever public attention he's drawn has only made his job harder. The case in point this time is two cases. One involves a pedophile stalker who, not content with amassing a disquietingly extensive collection of pornographic photographs of children, has taken to writing boasting letters, with photos enclosed, to the Second City force. The other, even more alarming, features a serial killer who leaves his victims, raped and murdered, strewn throughout the borough of Spinnergate with a distressing lack of forensic evidence. Both perps seem irresistibly drawn to the even higher public profile of Coffin's wife, actress Stella Pinero. The pedophile sends photos and letters directly to her; the killer threatens and kidnaps her. When she escapes, it's with a photo that may well indicate that the two perps are the same. As the taunting messages continue and the body count rises, Coffin-with help from Paul Masters, his lead administrator; Phoebe Astley, the Chief Inspector who's still carrying a torch for him; and a dozen other assistants, eventually including Stella herself-strains to find the pattern underlying the wave of violence. The answer, when it comes, will be plausible and powerful, though naggingly inconclusive. Mid-range Coffin, with a sobering series of crimes efficiently set forth but disappointingly wound up. Still, every procedural detail, from the workings of the Second City force to the personnel's inevitable personal problems, rings as true as ever. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Product Description With his wife, the acclaimed actress Stella Pinero, away on a movie shoot in Scotland, Chief Commander John Coffin is at a bit of a loose end with just the cat and dog for company. But one morning, as he checks through the mail for his wife, he gets a rather unpleasant surprise: horrific pictures of badly abused children sent anonymously to Stella. Rather than worry his wife, he vows to track down the culprit and calls in a trusted colleague, DCI Phoebe Astley, to assist him in his inquiries. As they investigate Stella's stalker, another serious problem faces the detectives of the Second City of London. Several young girls have been murdered in Spinnergate with distinct and brutal similarities between the cases. Is there a serial killer on the loose? What is the connection to Stella Pinero, or is it all coincidence? As the investigations get closer to each other in focus, Coffin starts to feel that there are very personal motives at play as his wife's tormentor racks up the tension. When excavations near St Luke's unearth a chilling secret buried in the grounds of Stella's theater, John feels the net closing around those nearest to him and must act quickly or risk losing all that he holds dear. A gripping exploration of hidden desires and terrors, Coffin Knows the Answer poses some disturbing questions about identity and relationships in the modern world. 7 Gwendoline Butler Coffin on Murder Street
NY Minotaur Books 1992 0312076738 / 9780312076733 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
0312076738 219 pages, minor chipping top and bottom spine of dust jacket. From Publishers WeeklyIn Butler's latest procedural, ominous threats to a child galvanize the police of the fictional Second City of London and their commander, John Coffin, who is being investigated by an overzealous MP. Nell Casey, an American soap opera star who is appearing in a theater festival run by Coffin's sometime lover, Stella Pinero, turns to Coffin when her young son Tom's teddy bear is stolen and buried in their ok yard under a marker bearing the boy's name. Coffin soon receives the disturbing news that William Arthur Duerden, a suspected child molester and murderer, has moved into his district of command. While his officers search for Duerden and proof of a pederasty ring, the boy disappears. Suspected abductors include an actor who is part of the festival; Nell's former lover, who hates her and believes he is Tom's father; and Nell herself, who may have arranged the abduction as a publicity stunt. As the police laboriously seek the pederasts, Nell disappears. Butler ( Coffin and the Paper Man ) breathes life and energy into her well-crafted tale, set in the vibrant Second City, an area of London resembling the Docklands.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.From Kirkus ReviewsBig trouble in the Docklands area of London where Chief Commander John Coffin (Coffin and the Paper Man, etc.) heads the Police Force, living nearby in an old church that's been converted into apartments and a theater complex. His neighbor is actress Stella Pinero, longtime friend, onetime lover, who runs the repertory company recently joined by TV and stage actress Nell Casey, just back from the US with small son Tom and nanny Sylvie. Here, Coffin's problems start with the disappearance of a tour bus, passengers aboard, all of them found drugged--and one of them dead- -when the bus surfaces. The fatality is elderly loner Jim Lollard. He lived on Regina Street, whose murderous history and present-day perfidies were his life's work. Then Nell Casey's son is kidnapped, climaxing a series of chilling minor incidents, amid rumors of a known child molester in the area. Days later, Nell vanishes--and Coffin's job is on the line. A hard look into the past uncovers a lurid secret, and teamwork does the rest. Another of Butler's superior procedurals, marked by brisk pacing, a clutch of quirky characters, and an unflagging air of menace.

8 Gwendoline Butler Coffin'S Game (Commander John Coffin Mysteries)
Worldwide Library 2000 0373263538 / 9780373263530 Paperback Very Good
0373263538 From Publishers Weekly In the latest entertaining addition in Butler's long-running series of English police procedurals (A Double Coffin, etc.), Chief Comdr. John Coffin confronts a deadly conspiracy intended to destroy everything he holds most dear. Shortly after two terrorist bombs go off in London, the police are called in to examine a dead body. Its face has been mutilated beyond recognition, but evidence at the scene suggests that the corpse could be Stella Pinero, the famous actress and Coffin's wife. Stella's blue Chanel handbag is found next to the body; inside, there is a photograph of her eating a human arm. Even after the coroner proves the corpse was that of a man dressed up to look like Stella, many questions remain to be answered. Who is trying to implicate Stella in such a horrific crime? Could the dead man be a missing undercover policeman? Where has the real Stella disappeared to? As further murders occur, Coffin and Stella's personal and professional lives are threatened, but the savvy protagonist and his team eventually arrive at the truth. Butler paints a credible relationship between Stella and Coffin, two driven professionals who are fiercely independent yet dedicated to each other. Though her writing can be flat, her serpentine plotting is strong enough to provide a satisfying puzzler. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Library Journal Stella Pinero, actress, theater owner, and wife of London's Second City police commander, John Coffin, has gone missing. Not only that, but a body disguised as hers is found at the scene of a terrorist bombing that Coffin is investigating. Though the body is not Stella's, and she finally turns up, Coffin and his cohorts suspect that she has some connection to the terrorists. As the police move too close to the truth, several other murders occur, also implicating Stella. Needless to say, there is some tension between husband and wife, thankfully resolved as the story ensues. Nevertheless, despite her usual interesting protagonists, Butler's plot gets murkier as it progresses, motivation is slim and mostly unexplained, and loose ends abound. Not her best effort, but perhaps fans will want it. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
