Volume I of his journals, entitled BLOCKADING THE SOUTH, 1862-1866 was about his Civil War experiences. This volume of his journals recounts his experiences after he joined the Asiatic Fleet, when fighting had broken out between supporters of the Shogun and those of the Emperor of Japan. His journal, now published for the first time, is one of the few American records of Japan in the period of the Meiji Restoration. In his journals, he describes the shrines, temples and volcanoes of Japan, her magnificent scenery, the events of the war, and his day to day life in the Orient. Price:
